Don’t let the cooler weather fool you, there’s still a lot of fun activities to enjoy after the warm weather has gone and the snow has yet to fall. Summers are usually very active with the weather driving everyone outside to walk, run, cycle and swim, and the fall months can be just as active. If you enjoy the autumn scenery and walking outdoors, you may want to consider pole walking. Think of it as a cross between regular walking and cross-country skiing. Using poles for balance, support and momentum, it’s a great workout that uses up to 90% of your body’s muscles while increasing your cardio workout by almost 25% over regular walking.
If you prefer to take it down a few notches in the fall, there are a lot of indoor hobbies you can try. Have you ever wanted to learn to knit or crochet? It’s the hottest hobby in Hollywood with the “A” list stars including everyone from Cameron Diaz to Madonna getting in on the craze. Knitting is easy to learn and relaxing to do. Local yarn shops will usually offer free lessons and you can find step-by-step instructions on many websites, too. Even with just the basic stitches under your belt, you can quickly knit simple, warm scarves and hats that you can donate to children’s charities and hospitals.
And, finally, if cabin fever gets to you as the weather cools down, and you feel that you just have to get out of the house, there is no end to volunteer opportunities in most communities. From local hospitals to animal shelters, old age home and schools, your unique experience and skills can always be put to good use helping others. |
